In this Netgear Orbi review video Paul sets up and tests the Netgear Orbi Whole Home WiFi mesh system (RBK53) using a wired ethernet backhaul. It’s a great system for eliminating WiFi deadspots in your house and making sure you have good, strong and super-fast WiFi signal everywhere in your house.
The Orbi is a tri-band system meaning there’s a dedicated 5GHz wireless backhaul connection between router and satellite(s), but you can also connect Orbi satellite with ethernet – which is what we do in this video.

We set up the RBK53 kit, which contains the AC3000 units (AC2200 also available), with a hardwired ethernet backhaul in a house with three floors.
— Netgear Orbi Review —
We saw a huge WiFi speed improvement throughout the house – up to 523% faster in our tests and by our maths!

Thanks for the review – very useful
I am looking for an Ethernet backhaul mesh system to cover our large house, outhouse and garden studio so I am interested to know if the orb is still the best or whether to consider alternatives like TP Link’s Deco and Google Nest. I could also consider EE’s system as we are on EE fibre broadband.
Looking forward to your thoughts
Peter
Hi Peter! Thanks for your comment, and I’m glad you found the video useful. Nearly 2 years on my Orbi system is still going strong and working flawlessly, and I’ve also added the Outdoor Satellite (see other video on the channel) too. I don’t have any direct experience with any other mesh systems, as I’ve only ever used Orbi – although I’ve briefly used Google WiFi (the slightly older system, not Nest WiFi) at a friend’s house and found it to be quite good, although more aimed at less tech and network-savvy home users and with fewer ports to connect more devices without needing an extra switch. I would definitely recommend the Orbi, as I find it to be really good, fast and works well plus you can still login to the admin interface to change and setup more advanced settings. If you don’t care about advanced control, then the Nest WiFi will also be a great option as well I’m sure… but if I had to recommend one, go with Orbi 🙂 Hope that’s helpful! Paul.
Thanks for your fast response Paul
They do look good but I will need at least 5 units so the cost is quite high compared to some of the alternatives – about £550 for the Orbi AC2200 series whereas 6 of TP Link’s deco M4 ac1200 would be £250.
Some thinking and research to do😉
Peter
