“Electric car driver turned away from hospital car park” – You might have read in the news recently that I was turned away from one of the car parks at Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool because they have banned electric cars (“temporarily”, it turns out…).

Since the story got so much traction (it was the most-read article on the entire BBC News website for quite a while) and got picked up by several other media organisations, I thought it would be worth making a quick video telling the full story, discussing the key points and issues raised (especially surrounding genuine fire risks but also other misinformation regarding electric vehicles) as well as responding to some comments and feedback I’ve seen since the news story broke.

For lots of good, impartial information about electric cars and clean energy I’d recommend you subscribe to and watch @fullychargedshow and @EverythingElectricShow

Sound Bites
💥 “Because the battery in your car will react with the metal car park and it could catch fire or explode.”
🔥 “When EVs, electric cars, do burn, they’re harder to put out, but they are far safer and less likely to catch fire in the first place.”
🚭 “The negative press from the fossil fuel industry is exactly the same playbook as when the tobacco industry tried to convince people that smoking wasn’t bad for you.”

Takeaways
– Electric cars are often subject to misinformation and misconceptions, which can lead to unnecessary bans and restrictions.
– While there are genuine risks and issues associated with electric cars, they are safer and less likely to catch fire compared to petrol or diesel cars.
– The fossil fuel industry has a vested interest in spreading negative press about electric cars to protect their own interests.
– Accurate information about electric cars should be communicated to the public to dispel myths and promote clean energy solutions.
